Borovets lies on the northerly slope of the Rila Mountains at an altitude of 1350 m. It is Bulgaria's biggest and most popular purpose-built ski resort and much has been invested into extending and improving the facilities here that it now easily competes with Western counterparts.Borovets is easily accessible from the capital Sofia, being only 73 km away. It is also only 125km from Plovdiv, which makes it an easy destination by air as both Plovdiv and Sofia have international airports. Nearby Samokov is a mere 12 km away. Borovets is Bulgaria's oldest ski resort. It was first established in 1896, when it was known as Chamkoriya and its primary function was to provide hunting facilities for Bulgarian Royalty. With the onslaught of the Communist Regime, the resort slowly developed into a ski centre, which has twice hosted the World Cup Alpine Skiing Championships. The Borovets Biathlon Track is known as one of the best in the world.

Borovets offers 4827 m of ski pistes with a difference in altitude of around 1046 m. The ski-lift infrastructure consists of drag lifts, baby tows, seat chain lifts, two High Speed Quad Chairs, a 200 m. Carpet lift, a Fixed Grip Quad Chair, ten Surface ski lifts and nine tow lifts and a six-seat gondola lift, which takes skiers to the Yastrebets peak, 2363 m above sea level. Ski lifts open at 9.00 am and close at 4.30 pm,and as Borovets is a resort, which puts the safety of its skiers first there are regular maintenance checks which also means that some lifts will be closed at certain times of the month, they are displayed on a timetable at the main lift stations. Borovets lift system handles high volumes of traffic during the peak season; the gondola lift can carry up to 1200 peoples per hour over a journey time of 20 minutes, whilst the tow lifts can take 8150 people per hour.The resorts longest run is a scenic 12 km long and takes skiers back into the town with some being able to ski to their hotel door.
Borovets is a great resort for all ages and abilities and its network of ski schools provide excellent teaching in a variety of foreign languages. Instruction is divided into five skill levels and it is possible to join a group or to have one to one private tuition and it is also available for those who wish to learn snowboarding. Children aged between 4 to 8 years of age can attend a well-supervised ski kindergarten, which is open all day long.

If you enjoy skiing but have never skied under torchlight at night, then ensure that you give it a try in Borovets. There are special passes available for those who want to ski at night. Those pistes that offer night skiing are well-manicured in time for the first night skiers, who can use the pistes from 5 pm until 10 pm.
For those who don't fancy hurtling down a piste at uncontrollable speeds, then Cross-country skiing may provide the perfect alternative. Borovets has 35 km of cross country ski trails, which have been constructed according to the exacting standards of the French Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS). The width of each piste is a minimum 6 m. Experienced sports people may also use the resorts biathlon facilities.
A fun activity, which is growing in popularity is riding on a ski-doo. Two-man ski-doos are available for hire in the resort and it is possible to hire a guide to take you on a tour through the local forests.
